Faculty-Led Maymester Trips
The department of Applied Linguistics faculty take a group of students each year to China during Maymester. Courses offered include 6 hours of credit for AL 4151 Communication across Cultures CTW and AL 4161 TEFL II Practicum. Students stay on campus at Shanghai University, observe and teach English classes there and at various private institutions, participate in cultural activities on and off campus, and travel to Beijing and Suzhou for additional cultural experiences. See the Study Abroad office website for details about upcoming programs.
Applied Linguistics students may also choose to participate in a number of international exchange programs for one or more semesters. These programs are a great opportunity to experience cultural and linguistic immersion. We currently have programs in China (Shanghai University – fall, spring, or summer terms), Thailand (Khon Kaen University – fall or spring terms), and South Korea (Sookmyung Women’s University – fall, spring, or summer terms). All of these programs allow for not only Applied Linguistics courses taught in English, but also intensive language study in a variety of Asian languages. Also, all three provide internship opportunities for students who want work experience overseas. See the Study Abroad office website for details about upcoming programs.
